The Greenwich Maritime Institute (GMI) is a research and postgraduate centre, founded to become a centre of excellence in London dedicated to advancing and promoting an understanding of maritime activity in the present, past and future, at both national and international levels.

The GMI is a free-standing institute within the University of Greenwich, drawing on the University's existing academic strengths and developing them in new directions.

Greenwich is a part of London with a long association with shipping, so the Institute maintains and builds on an historic and educational tradition, but also looks towards the future needs of the global maritime community.
