The Institute of Maritime Law has been operating from the University of Southampton since its inception in 1982 and is the leading UK centre for teaching, research and consultancy in maritime law disciplines. The Institute currently consists of seven Academic members, one Senior Research Fellow, two Visiting Research Fellows, two Research Assistants, one Librarian and two Secretaries. Several members of the Institute have been or are in practice as barristers, solicitors or arbitrators. In addition to the renowned three-week Short Course in Maritime Law - the 35th version will be held in 2008 - the Institute runs a number of courses on topical subjects each year for practitioners and other participants in the maritime industry. The Institute also runs tailor-made courses for particular groups on request. Consultancy services can be provided both by individual Members of the Institute, or where applicable by a team of Members. Apart from courses, our specialist areas include contracts for the carriage of goods (charterparties and bills of lading), contracts for the international sale of goods, international law of the sea, letters of credit, marine environmental law, marine insurance, maritime liabilities (e.g. collisions and salvage) as well as enforcement of claims generally (including liens and mortgages, limitation, conflict of laws and ship arrest) and arbitration.
