Insurance

London is the world's leading centre for marine insurance. Physical risk in shipping arises from shipping operations, cargo loss or damage as well as shipbuilding and London provides a solid infrastructure for the insurance of these risks.

Shipbroking

Responsible for matching ships with cargoes, arranging the sale and purchase of vessels as well as broking freight derivatives, UK based shipbrokers continue to dominate the international shipping sector. An estimated 30-40% of dry bulk and 50% of tanker fixtures are transacted by UK based shipbroking firms (source: the Baltic Exchange).

Education

A key strength of the UK's maritime services sector is its strong educational foundation with a highly educated and well qualified workforce. The UK is home to not only some of the world's best known universities for arts and science, but also to specialist maritime industry related training.

London is home to the world's leading classification societies including the headquarters of Lloyd's Register and the regional offices of nine other societies. Between them these societies ensure that 90% of the world's cargo carrying tonnage is safely designed and constructed.
