Classification & surveying
London is home to the world's leading classification societies including the headquarters of Lloyd's Register and the regional offices of nine other societies. Between them these societies ensure that 90% of the world's cargo carrying tonnage is safely designed and constructed.
Independent surveying firms based around the
UK provide support to P&I Clubs, underwriters, shipowners,
law firms and average adjusters in claims handling and loss
prevention. The Salvage
Association, now incorporated within BMT Marine & Offshore
Surveys, is an international surveying organisation closely
connected with the London Market, which investigates casualties
and can determine the extent and cause of loss.
Average adjusters advise on and adjust marine
claims. London is the leading international centre for this
profession, which has a small number of practitioners, but handles
a huge volume of claims. According to the Association
of Average Adjusters, there are some 300 individuals
engaged in the profession in the UK.
