Held as part of the London International Shipping Week 2025, this panel will explore the indispensable role of maritime pilots in casualty response and their significant value as first responders within the UK’s maritime salvage framework.
Featuring the UK’s Secretary of State’s Representative for Maritime Salvage and Intervention (SOSREP), the event will highlight how pilots provide critical early interventions to stabilise distressed vessels, safeguarding lives, property and the environment, protecting the maritime trade arteries of our island nation.
The discussion will underscore pilots’ contributions in strengthening the UK’s salvage system, bolstering environmental and economic security through rapid interventions and providing key support to harbour masters in their roles of overseeing port safety.
With insights from SOSREP and the Chair of the Admiralty Solicitors Group (ASG), the event will examine policy frameworks that support pilots’ vital work, promoting safety and environmental priorities while reinforcing the UK’s position as a global maritime leader.

Held as part of the London International Shipping Week 2025, this event will launch the 2025 edition of the Climate Action in Shipping Report, an annual publication that tracks progress towards the uptake of at least 5% of scalable zero emission fuel in international shipping by 2030 whilst striving for 10%, known as the 2030 breakthrough which was launched at COP26 as part of the UN High Level Climate Champions 2030 Breakthrough Campaign. Climate Champions, Getting to Zero Coalition, Maritime London and UCL collaborated on developing a plan of forward looking indicators that are needed to achieve shipping’s system transformation across 5 different levers; technology & supply, finance, demand, policy and civil society and subsequently on an annual basis track progress against these with a view to demonstrating where the sector is on achieving this 2030 goal and highlight real world signals of change and where progress is lacking.

The maritime industry remains at a pivotal juncture and continues to face significant challenges. Chief among these is the imperative to prioritise decarbonisation and aim for net zero emissions by 2050. Alongside this, the industry must adapt to new and disruptive technologies such as artificial intelligence and autonomous shipping which have the capacity to transform the face of shipping if the industry is able and willing, and has the financial support, to embrace them.
As the UK strives to lead in maritime innovation and sustainability, the scale of investment is substantial. The estimated cost of decarbonising the industry ranges between $1.5 and $1.9 trillion. At current levels of lending, traditional financing sources may not be sufficient to cover the huge investment needed and alternative sources of finance will need to be considered.
The Department for Transport, Maritime London and Norton Rose Fulbright are delighted to invite you to join us for an engaging mix of keynote speeches and panel discussions as we explore with leading figures within the maritime community how the UK has positioned itself to address these challenges and support the maritime industry into the future, including through the UK’s financial and professional business services industries and by harnessing the power of UK Government support. The event is held as part of the London International Shipping Week 2025, see the full agenda here.
Spaces are limited so please register early to avoid disappointment. We reserve the right to limit the number of attendees per organisation if the event is oversubscribed.

JOIN our live and interactive HFW and Maritime London webinar to learn more about the new law and importantly what Reasonable Procedures steps shipping businesses may wish to consider to ensure that they may benefit from the defence.
On October 26 2023 Parliament passed the Economic Crime and Corporate Transparency Act 2023 which included a new offence of “Failure to Prevent Fraud” and importantly which is subject to a defence of putting in place Reasonable Procedures. The new law follows a similar formula to similar failure to prevent offences for bribery and tax evasion.
Under the new offence, which has extraterritorial effect an organisation wherever incorporated and meeting two out of three of the following thresholds:
1) more than 250 employees and/or
2) more than £36 million turnover and/or
3) more than £18 million in total assets
will be liable where a specified fraud offence subject to UK jurisdiction (many of these can have fairly broad jurisdictional scope) is committed by an associate, e.g. an employee or agent etc. for the organisation’s benefit, and the organisation did not have reasonable fraud prevention procedures in place. It does not need to be demonstrated that company management ordered or knew about the fraud.
