Maritime London hosts “Meeting the Challenges of the NorthWest Passage Expedition” webinar

Posted on: 18 February 2021

A team of adventurers is setting out to become the first to row the notorious 2,300 mile Arctic route between the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans along the coast of Canada. Truly the “Last Great First”, the navigation of the Northwest Passage by rowing boat will raise worldwide awareness about the importance of ocean conservation and climate change. Initially planned for the summer of 2021, the Expedition has been postponed by a year due to the pandemic and is now scheduled to take place in the summer of 2022.

This was the theme of Maritime London’s latest webinar hosted by Chief Executive Jos Standerwick, which was organised in partnership with one of the Expedition’s sponsors, Solis Marine Consultants.

Leven Brown, NorthWest Passage Expedition Leader and Crew Member Phil Kite explained the incredibly complex logistical and navigational challenges, the demands, the boats and the dangers the 15 rowers will face as they attempt the ultimate ocean to row. The panel was also joined by Solis Marine Co-Founder and Master Mariner John Simpson, who reflected on just some of the historical and modern day challenges facing the intrepid explorers.

The webinar attendees and the wider public were invited to show support by visiting the Expedition’s promotional merchandise outlet www.nwpexpeditiongin.com and puchasing the specially designed gin and a range of candles and diffusers.

The Northwest Passage Expedition Gin has been distilled in the Orkney – the last port of call for many explorers making the hazardous journey to the Arctic and Northern Canada. The Gin is flavoured with botanicals from the shores of Orkney and the Hudson Bay. The unique flavours are drawn from Sugar Kelp, Angelica Archangelica, Ramanas Rose, and Burnet Rose. The Angelica root adds a hint of sweetness that is balanced by a subtle, floral note from the roses. The addition of lemon peel and calamondin brings the bright, citrus notes to the gin and the sugar kelp adds a mild saltiness to the palette, connecting the spirit to the sea.  Just one sip will transport you back to the Age of Discovery.
