Enhanced collaboration will focus on advanced technology and smart shipping

Co-operation enhanced between the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) and Lloyd’s Register (LR)

Posted on: 27 April 2017

LR CEO, Alastair Marsh, signed two Memorandums of Understanding (MoU) during Singapore Maritime Week. The first promotes research and development (R&D) and innovation, building upon strong existing collaborations (e.g. enhanced understanding of cargo liquefaction to increase vessel stability and safety, extreme wave impact to optimise time and cost of semi-submersible rig design) and extending into big data and intelligent systems for real time condition monitoring, unmanned systems and robotics for operations, maintenance and inspections and emerging areas such as 3D printing (metal additive manufacturing).

The second MoU, signed between LR, MPA, Alpha Ori Technology Holdings Pte. Ltd, Singapore and the Technology Centre for Offshore & Marine, Singapore (TCOMS), acknowledges the agreement to set up a Centre Of Innovation (COI) for SMARTShip Technology. The COI’s efforts will be focused on projects related to smart shipping, advanced data analytics, and cyber security etc.

Commenting on the MoU signings, LR CEO Alastair Marsh said, “We are delighted to strengthen our long standing relationship with the MPA today with these MoU signings. Today represents yet another step in LR’s commitment to the region, in particular to advance technology innovation especially in the areas of digital, big data and intelligent systems, unmanned systems and robotics, as well as to enhance safety, cyber/physical security and unlock economic and productivity enhancements for the maritime and marine sector.”

He added, “We see a very exciting future for Singapore, which is bringing disruptive, transformational thinking, especially in digital, data and software to the marine and offshore industry. Singapore can take a lead by continuing to focus on collaboration, partnerships and co-innovation – working with key partners in government, academia and business.”
