Hill Dickinson to hold two major conferences during LISW15

Posted on: 24 July 2015

Major international maritime law firm Hill Dickinson LLP is to host a series of hard hitting conferences during London International Shipping Week 2015 which will focus on issues surrounding casualties and commodities. Major players in the maritime industry, the UK government and Hill Dickinson are among the confirmed speakers at both events.

Chaired by Michael Grey, former Editor of Lloyd’s List and Fellow of the Nautical Institute, the first conference, entitled ‘Maritime Casualties: Managing the Operational, Commercial and Legal Risks’, will review the refloating operation of the Costa Concordia, consider criminalisation in the USA of shore staff in shipping, (especially in the context of a casualty) and the progress of the EU in managing the issue of ports of refuge.

The conference will also address managing the lifecycle of a casualty to minimise a vessel’s loss of earnings and the legal issues that an emergency response team should be considering from the first telephone call. This conference will take place on Tuesday 8 September from 10:00 to 17:30.

Confirmed speakers include:

·         Captain Nick Sloane, the Salvage Master of Costa Concordia
·         Hugh Shaw, the Secretary of State’s Representative for Maritime Salvage & Intervention
·         George Chalos, Founding Member and Principle of Chalos & Co, P.C
·         Mike Mallin, Hill Dickinson Partner and Master Mariner
·         Ian MacLean, Hill Dickinson Partner and Master Mariner

The second conference, entitled ‘Shipping Commodities’, will focus on issues arising from the international sale of commodities. The seminar will feature a number of high‐profile speakers from the commodities industry. They will be joined by Hill Dickinson’s own commodities team, including Jeff Isaacs, and David Lucas who are consistently singled out as leading practitioners. This seminar will take place on Wednesday 9 September.

Speaking about the events, Hill Dickinson’s Head of Global Shipping Patrick Hawkins said: “These events are expected to be fully subscribed. Especially as Hill Dickinson has one of the strongest casualty teams in the business.”

Both events will take place at Hill Dickinson’s Central London office at The Broadgate Tower. Tickets for these events can be found on the official LISW15 website www.londoninternationalshippingweek.com/events . All proceeds from ticket sales will be donated to the LISW15 charities.
