Lloyd’s Register celebrates World Day for Safety and Health at Work

Posted on: 29 April 2016

Lloyd’s Register’s (LR) has held a series of events worldwide to celebrate the annual health and safety at work campaign day organised by the International Labour Organization (ILO).

The theme of the campaign this year is workplace stress and LR is holding events at 75 offices around the world to highlight simple measures that employees can take to reduce stress and improve their health. LR’s activities include cardiovascular training, healthy eating initiatives, walking and hiking events, wellbeing talks, blood donations, massages, malaria awareness, eye care screening, and yoga and meditation classes. All LR employees are being encouraged to take part for example by walking up stairs or standing up every 20 minutes from their desk to improve their health.

James Pomeroy, LR’s Health, Safety, Environment & Security Director, said: “As an organisation with safety at the heart of our work since 1760, the health and safety of our employees is very high on our agenda. In the last three years, our number of lost time incidents has reduced by 26%. But we recognise that if we are to continue reducing the numbers of accidents and incidents, we need to focus on the people, not the systems. We have just launched a zero-harm safety initiative to help us move the needle on our safety performance. By encouraging our people to work and behave safely, we not only improve our safety performance but we also have a positive impact on the safety performance of our clients, the sites on which we work and all of this, in turn, positively impacts wider society.”

The World Day for Safety and Health at Work is an annual international campaign to promote safe, healthy and decent work. It is held on 28 April and has been observed by the ILO since 2003. For more details see the ILO website.
