Marine Society wins prestigious award

Posted on: 10 May 2016

Marine Society has won the ‘Investment in People’ category for the charity’s @Sea online programmes at the very prestigious Seatrade Awards on Friday, 6 May.

The Seatrade Awards, chaired by International Maritime Organization (IMO) Secretary-General Kitack Lim and held at London’s Guildhall, celebrates the maritime and shipping industry’s successes and innovations.

Marine Society’s award winning @Sea phone apps are maritime-themed e-learning courses designed specifically for seafarers to help improve their basic knowledge of maths and English, using nautical language and examples.

Maths@Sea helps seafarers apply basic mathematical concepts, whilst Maths@Sea+ builds on this foundation by offering more advanced mathematics. Writing@Sea covers report writing, formal letters and grammar essentials. It’s tailor-made for the maritime sector with examples, assignments, and tests using familiar seafaring language and imagery. Following the huge success of the @Sea programmes, the charity is expanding their offering with English@Sea launching soon.

Mark Windsor, Director of Lifelong Learning at the Marine Society: “We are delighted to win this prestigious award. It is a result of hard work and dedication from the team and is such a great honour. It marks a very exciting time for the Marine Society.

“To be acknowledged by a panel of industry experts validates all the hard work we have done so far for seafarers.”

The ‘Investment in People’ award recognises the significant contribution to the recruitment, training, retention and advancement of the industry’s most valuable asset, its people.

The Marine Society’s @Sea online programmes are also recognised by the Nautical Institute and IMarEST as providing a valuable contribution towards Continuing Professional Development.

Marine Society supports the personal and professional development of those who go to sea or work in the maritime community, enabling them to learn new skills, gain accredited qualifications and realise their full potential. They also provide a series of book services, including libraries to ships and installations globally. Marine Society believe that seafarers shouldn’t miss out on opportunities just because they are at sea.
