New COO for The Nautical Institute

Posted on: 25 October 2015

A leading maritime professional with extensive experience in training and education will take up the new post of Chief Operating Officer with The Nautical Institute in November.

The Nautical Institute is pleased to announce the appointment of Captain John Lloyd MBA AFNI to the newly created post with effect from 2nd November 2015.

In June, The Nautical Institute announced that it was enhancing its sector management structure with the creation of the COO role. Captain Lloyd will have overall responsibility for business development, personnel and product management of the accreditation and certification department, reflecting the increasing demand from industry for training services. He will lead a 20-strong team dealing with accreditation and certification and will be actively involved in other training schemes. His main focus will be oversight of the industry-standard dynamic positioning operator (DPO) certification, which the Institute manages on behalf of stakeholders.

John joins the Institute from the Australian Maritime College (AMC) in Tasmania where he is a Professor in the National Centre for Ports and Shipping. During his seven years at AMC he had a two years leave of absence to set up the Angolan Maritime Training Centre. Before joining AMC he spent two years working in the Vanuatu Maritime College.

John’s varied career prior to these appointments included four years in senior positions with Flagship Training in the UK, 10 years with Warsash Maritime Centre as a senior and principal lecturer in simulation and operations, and two years as a marine pilot in Walvis Bay. He served at sea from 1975 for 16 years, gaining command in 1987.

He brings his wealth of knowledge and experience to lead and develop the Institute’s accreditation and certification services for specialised training. To ensure a smooth transition of current work in this area, the Institute is pleased to advise that the Director of Accreditation Services, Regina Bindao, has agreed to remain in post until the year end before leaving to establish her consultancy business.

In announcing Captain Lloyd’s appointment, Philip Wake, Chief Executive, said that it underlines the importance of these services to the industry and the potential for further growth in existing schemes as well as development into new training specialisations.

“We look forward to welcoming John into the team and benefiting from his energy, enthusiasm and business acumen in our professional development services. Rapid change and growth have been a constant challenge in recent years and we have no doubt that the future will be equally exciting as John develops the strategic role of our training and accreditation department within the maritime industry,” he added.
