OSCAR Dragon Boat Race is back!

After a 2-year pause due to the pandemic, the 2022 OSCAR Dragon Boat Race will be bigger and better

Posted on: 25 January 2022

The 7th OSCAR Dragon Boat Race will take place on Thursday 15 September 2022 at Dockland’s Watersports and Sailing Centre, London, and we’d love for you to be a part of it, says the event’s organiser Spinnaker Global.

About OSCAR and Great Ormond Street Hospital
The OSCAR Campaign supports treatments and research within the bone marrow specialism at Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children.  The Campaign is named after my son, Oscar Parry, who received life-saving care from GOSH when he was very young. Oscar endured two forms of leukaemia, two bone marrow transplants, the first ever childhood mesenchymal stem cell transplant in the UK, over 100 blood transfusions, five brain haemorrhages and five years of chemotherapy. Thanks to the pioneering work of the bone marrow transplant team at GOSH, Oscar is now 22, and the shipping community is saving the lives of other children by supporting more and more new treatments for children with previously incurable diseases.

On the surface, GOSH is a normally-funded NHS hospital, but beneath the surface it is a world-leading living breathing research laboratory that treats – and saves – the sickest children from all over the globe. It does this thanks to its ability to hire the best people and to invest in their work. That is thanks to the charitable funds it raises from supporters, again all over the globe. The charity has suffered during the pandemic and needs our help more than ever.

About the OSCAR Dragon Boat Race
This annual event has already raised over £700,000 towards the total raised by the OSCAR Campaign which now exceeds £2m. 25 teams compete against one other and the top six teams battle it out in a final. There is a bar, food, quayside games and activities and a DJ to get everyone in the mood. And this year there will also be a classic car show as part of the event. It’s an excellent networking event and good fun. Most importantly, no training is required for those who want to race.

Previous teams include:
Oldendorff, Borealis Maritime, AM Nomikos, Lomar Shipping, LISCR, Gaslog, Golar LNG, Scorpio, MSC Cruises, North of England P&I, AET, John Swire & Sons, The Baltic Exchange, Augustea, Arrow Shipbroking, Teekay, Lloyds Register, Waves Group, BDO LLP, Hill Dickinson, Ince & Co, Skuld P&I, JLT Specialty, UK P&I Club, Union Maritime,  HFW, Beazley, Port of London Authority, Thomas Miller, Clyde & Co, Department for Transport, Shipowners Club, Britannia P&I, Clarksons Plateau, Talbot Underwriting, CJC Law, Steamship Mutual, Neon Underwriting, IRI Marshall Islands, Graypage, CI Connect, Nectar Group,  C Solutions, IG, BRS Brokers, Nautilus, Pole Star, Mavega, HSBC Ship Finance
