National Trafalgar Day Parade 2016

Posted on: 6 November 2016

Over 400 Sea Cadets converged on Trafalgar Square, Horse Guards Parade and The Mall today to commemorate Britain’s victory at The Battle of Trafalgar, which also marked Admiral Nelson’s death more than two centuries ago. This year’s Parade also marked Sea Cadets 160th birthday year.

Sea Cadets from across the UK, aged between 10 and 18, marched and performed on behalf of the Royal Navy. Juniors performed a flag display, the Physical Training section undertook traditional skip jump before the 60-strong Massed Band of the Sea Cadet Corp marched and played onto the Square.

The Sea Cadets have marched through London on the closest Sunday to October 21 for more than 100 years now.

It was an impressive and unique occasion offering a valuable opportunity to showcase the positive impact the Sea Cadets movement can make on young people and the role it plays in their lives. After just a few days together cadets from all over the UK converged to practise and then deliver what was an exceptional parade and display.

Martin Coles, MSSC Chief Executive Officer commented: ‘This year, for the first time we saw the Juniors join the parade in wishing Sea Cadets happy birthday for our 160th year spelled out in Semaphore flags!’

‘We are truly committed to providing young people with the best head start in life, giving them a new perspective, broadening horizons and creating new and exciting opportunities. Our aim is to help more young people to see the future they want and give them the chance to make that future happen’.

Save the date for the next National Trafalgar Day Parade, which will take place on Sunday 22 October 2017. For more information please contact the MSSC team on events@ms-sc.org or call 020 7654 7000.
